Landslip threat looms over villages

HETAUDA: Human settlements at the Jirkhe cliff of Rakshirang VDC, Makawanpur, are at high risk of landslides in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.

Cracks have surfaced in many places of the VDC due to the quakes. According to the human settlement relocation committee, the Jirkhe cliff might fall upon the villages any time during monsoon rains.

The committee has demanded that the concerned authority relocate the settlements to safer places as soon as possible.

As many as 289 households of the VDC are living in the danger zone.

Locals said that the VDC’s ward no 1, 3, 5, and 8 would be buried in case of landslides. The VDC office has also demanded that the District Administration Office relocate the settlements to Manahari VDC of the district.

Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Thapaliya said that his office would take initiative to relocate the human settlements that are at landslide risk.
