Language training for polls

Palpa, March 6:

With the objective of warding off communication problems that may crop up during the constituent assembly polls, police personnel of the Palpa District Police Office (DPO) have been trying to learn the Magar language.

Fifty-five police personnel, who will be mobilised in the eastern region of Palpa during the polls, have been learning to speak Magar language for two days.

Over 70 per cent voters of 30 village development committees in east Palpa are from the Magar community. A majority of the Magars here use the mother tongue to communicate with each other. The training on Magar language is being imparted to police personnel to facilitate communication between voters and the security personnel during the polls, Palpa DSP Bhim Prasad Dhakal said.

“The training will help resolve problems that may crop up during the polls,” Palpa CDO Shambhu Ghimire said.

Inspector Punya Prasad Sharma said fluency in the Magar language will help them a lot. He said police personnel have also been learning about tradition of the Magars and the way to deal with voters. Trainers Yamuna Saru and Santosh Thapa said the Magars will be pleased to have Magar language-speaking security personnel in their villages.
