Left alliance consolidates its lead

The left alliance continued to lead as results for provincial and parliamentary first-past-the-post elections poured in today from across the country.
According to the results announced by the Election Commission, the CPN-UML has won 52 parliamentary first-past-the-post constituencies and is leading in 18. The UML has also won 107 provincial FPTP constituencies and is leading in 39. Its alliance partner, CPN-MC, has won 24 parliamentary FPTP seats and is leading in nine. The CPN-MC has also won 53 provincial FPTP seats and is leading in 16.
The Nepali Congress, on the other hand, has won 13 parliamentary FPTP seats and is leading in 10. It has also won 21 provincial FPTP seats and is leading in 12.
The RJP-Nepal is fourth on the tally table and has won five parliamentary FPTP seats and is leading in five. It has also won two provincial FPTP seats and is leading in six.
The Federal Socialist Forum Nepal has won three parliamentary FPTP seats and is leading in seven. It has also won nine provincial FPTP seats and is leading in five.
Others, including independent candidates, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Naya Shakti Party-Nepal, have won five parliamentary FPTP seats and are leading in three. Others have also won four provincial FPTP seats.

Prominent winners
- Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba won from his home constituency of Dadeldhura by a margin of more than 7,000 votes. Dueba has won all parliamentary elections since the 1991 general elections
- UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel won from Kathmandu-5. He defeated NC candidate Prakash Sharan Mahat by a margin of more than 9,000 votes
- UML Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Paudel won from Rupandehi-2 by a margin of more than 22,000 votes
- UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli won by a huge margin of more than 28,000 votes
- UML’s Jhalanath Khanal won from his home constituency of Ilam-1. He defeated NC’s Bhupendra Kattel by more than 16,000 votes
- UML’s Subas Chardra Nembang won from his home constituency of Ilam-2. He won by a margin of more than 9,000 votes
- UML Vice Chair Bhim Rawal won from his home constituency of Achham-1 by a margin of more than 7,000 votes
- RJP-N leader Mahantha Thakur won from Mahottari-3 by a margin of more than 18,000 votes
- Member of RJP-N presidium Anil Kumar Jha won from Rautahat-1
- Left alliance candidate Hridayesh Tripathi won from Nawalparasi Bardaghat Susta West-1
Prominent losers
- Senior Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Paudel, who contested elections from his home constituency of Tanahun-1, lost to CPN-UML’s Krishna Kumar Shrestha. Paudel had won all previous general elections since 1991 elections
- UML Vice-chair Bamdev Gautam, an architect of the electoral alliance forged between his party CPN-UML and the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led CPN-MC on the eve of provincial and parliamentary polls, lost to NC candidate Sanjay Kumar Gautam. Gautam, who contested elections from Bardiya-1, lost to Gautam by 752 votes
- Another NC heavyweight, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who contested from Jhapa-3, was defeated by Rastriya Prajatantra Party candidate Rajendra Lingden
- NC candidate Arzu Rana Deuba, who is the spouse of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, lost to a left alliance candidate. Arzu, who contested from Kailali-5, was defeated by UML’s Narad Muni Rana
- Former speaker Daman Nath Dhungana, who contested from Bhaktapur-1 on NC ticket, lost to CPN-UML candidate Mahesh Basnet. Basnet defeated Dhungana by a margin of more than 17,000 votes
- Vice-chair of RJP-N Sarvendranath Shukla, who contested parliamentary election from Rupandehi-4, was defeated by NC candidate Pramod Kumar Yadav
- RPP Chair Kamal Thapa, who contested from his home constituency of Makawanpur-1, was defeated by left alliance’s candidate Krishna Prasad Dahal
- NC’s Bimalendra Nidhi, who contested from Dhanusha-3, was defeated by a member of Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal presidium, Rajendra Mahato
