Local leaders helping update voters’ list: CEC

Chief election commissioner Keshav Raj Rajbhandari has claimed that leaders of political parties at the local level have been extending support to the election commission’s efforts to prepare for the forthcoming municipal election. Rajbhandari also hinted that the election would be announced by mid-October after completing preliminary preparations for election of municipalities, sub-metropolises and the metropolis of the country. Arriving in the district to assess the work progress and problems for the municipal election in Butwal municipality and Siddharthanagar municipality, Rajbhandari said, “We are getting help from political parties. Local leaders were involved in updating voters’ list.”

Saying that the election is being conducted to fortify party system, the chief election commissioner maintained the election would be successful because the security situation was improving. It is said that the Election Commission has planned to complete collecting voters’ names by mid-May, to publish primary list by mid-June and to finalise the list by mid-August.

The election date would be announced after consultation with the security authorities after the voters’ names are fed into computers. At the occasion, all 15 ward secretaries of Butwal municipalities had informed Rajbhandari that the updating of the voters’ list was going on smoothly and that they were getting help from local political leaders.
