Local level elections should be held by provinces: FA

KATHMANDU: The Federal Alliance reiterated that the local level elections announced for May 14 should be postponed and they should be held after the formation of provincial governments by themselves.

A meeting of a task force under the FA formed to decide protest programmes against the poll announcement held on Saturday under the chairmanship of the task force coordinator and the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal Co-Chairman Rajendra Shrestha raised the demand again, the FA spokesperson Om Gurung informed in a statement today.

The agitating bloc claimed the polls were announced for May 14 in a hurry while the Local Bodies Restructuring Commission submitted an incomplete report.

Without determining names, numbers and borders of autonomous, protected and special regions as the provision of Article 56.5 of the Constitution, the local bodies restructuring process could not be complete; hence, the polls should not be held now, it argued.

The meeting reiterated that endorsement of the Constitution amendment bill tabled at the Parliament, with some revisions, was a must before holding the local polls.

Meanwhile, the meeting decided to announce further protest programmes from the next meeting of the bloc.
