Maize farmers up in arms

BARA: A group of farmers in Bara today staged a protest rally in the district headquarters Kalaiya to press the government to fulfill the 12-point demands put forward by maize victim farmers.

Addressing the protest rally, organised by Farmers' Rights Central Struggle Committee, at Siddeswor, chairman of the committee Rasul Ansari said the government has fulfilled the demands only partially. "The government must look into the issues seriously," said Ansari.

Chandra Prasad Wagley accused the government of being indifferent to farmers' pleas. "Farmers are in miserable situation following the maize yield of cobs with no corn but the government has failed to pay heed to such a serious problem," he said.

Maize victim farmers have been demanding compensation for the loss, bank loans to the farmers at low interest rates, production of quality seeds in Nepal, irrigation facility and credit cards to the farmers, among others.
