Manisha Gharti Magar's beau remanded in 7-day custody

NAWALPARASI:  The Nawalparasi District Court on Friday remanded Manisha Gharti Magar's boyfriend Rudra Narayan Chaudhary in custody for seven days.

The 22-year-old youth was detained after Manisha, the teenage sister of Nepal national football team striker Bimal Gharti Magar, was found dead in a suspicious condition in her house in Bardaghat yesterday. After the discovery of the body, police suspected the 17-year-old girl was murdered.

During interrogation, Chaudhary told police that the couple had quarreled on Wednesday afternoon. When he returned her home in the evening in an inebriated state, they had another round of fight in which, according to Chaudhary, they had exchanged blows.

After that, Chaudhary told police, he -- apparently a regular visitor -- went to sleep on the verandah. But when he woke up at around 11 pm and went to see the girl, he claimed, he saw Manisha hanging in the room using a shawl, which she had gifted him.

According to police, he told them he unfastened the noose and laid the body onto the bed. Then a scared Chaudhary ran away to his own house, which is two kilometres away, though he "thought she could be alive".

Chaudhary had apparently thrown the shawl in some distance from her house.

Upon reaching home, according to Chaudhary, he narrated the story to his mother, Anjani Devi. In response, she apparently consoled him saying if he had not made any mistake, he needed not be afraid of, according to police.

Meanwhile, police inquired Anjani Devi also today.

Chaudhary and Magar were in a relationship for around four years and both of their families and neighbours knew about the matter, police said.

Meanwhile, Magar's autopsy was done at the Kathmandu-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital today.

He body was brought to Kathmandu yesterday for the forensic test.
