Maoist rallies wont make govt fall: Khanal

DHARAN: CPN-UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal today said the incumbent government will not topple just because of mass meetings and rallies being organised by the main opposition party, the UCPN-Maoist.

Speaking at a press conference organised by Press Chautari Nepal, Sunsari, in Dharan, UML chairperson Khanal urged the political parties and other stakeholders to work united for drafting the new statute within the stipulated time. Drafting the new statute is the need of the hour, but not formation and dissolution of a government, Khanal said.

Saying that the new constitution could be promulgated by May 28 if only a consensus is forged between the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist, Khanal said, “Since the UML has opened the door for national consensus, the main opposition has to demonstrate flexibility for timely statute and peace process.”

Accusing UCPN-Maoist of creating obstacles in the constitution drafting process by raising the issue of forming a new government under its leadership, Khanal said, “We are ready to accept a government under Maoist leadership if only it dismantles YCL and returns seized property to the rightful owners.”

He also suggested the main opposition to sit for dialogues for solving the current political crisis as no consensus could be formed by staging rallies and mass meetings.

On leadership dispute in the High Level Political Mechanism among big threes, member of the elite panel, Khanal said that efforts were on to build a consensus.
