Maoists say they will halt DDC, VDC works
Kathmandu, December 22:
Maoists today said they would not allow the Nuwakot District Development Committee (DDC) to conduct any business until their party joins the interim government.
Maoist cadres also tore the minute book of an all-party meeting that was held yesterday. A group of Maoists led by their Bidur municipality in-charge, Nabaraj Dhungana, barged into the DDC and ripped apart the minute book.
Maoists had been barring the DDC from holding the meeting for the past five months. The meet was finally held yesterday, but without the Maoists.
However, Local Development Officer Hari Lochan Sharma said the decisions taken in the meeting would be implemented.
In Banke, Maoists yesterday seized all documents of the Khajurakhurd VDC.
Following the incident, four VDC offices that had re-opened in the area have been closed again.
Seven Maoist cadres led by their area in-charge, Nabin, seized the documents, said Keshav Poudel, the Khajurakhurd VDC secretary.
Banke Chief District Officer Tilak Ram Sharma said: “I have no information of the offices shu-tting down again. If so, they will be reopened after talks.”
Maoists’ Banke in-charge Athak said: “We opposed the re-establishment of the VDC offices as the government appointed ambassadors against the peace treaty.”
In Morang, Maoists’ district in-charge Sagar has said his party would not allow secretaries of the village development committees to join duties.
In Dhankuta, Maoists have urged rural people not to pay electricity bills.
Maoists also said today they have captured a police post at Bayarban in Morang.
“We will capture other police posts also if the agreements are not followed by the government,” Maoists’ district in-charge Sagar said.
Elections may be delayed: Oli
KathmandU: Deputy Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Friday said constituent assembly elections would not be held at least until the next one-and-a-half years if Maoists do not mend their ways. “What is clear now is that if the Maoists do not give up extortion, intimidation and violent ways, we will not be able to hold the elections for the next one-and-a-half years,” Oli said at a function in the capital. — HNS
