Maoists trying to make CA defunct: PM
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today said that regular disruption of House proceedings by the UCPN-Maoist lawmakers would make the Constituent Assembly defunct.
Addressing a function at Gothatar VDC, PM Nepal said the Maoists would be held solely responsible, if the Constituent Assembly failed to present the draft of the new constitution on schedule."
Rubbishing rumours that some forces were at work to dissolve the CA, Nepal accused the Maoists of spreading baseless rumours in a bid to forward their political agenda.
Defending the President's move, Nepal said, "The President's move was constitutional and there is no need to submit to the Maoists' demand." He claimed that the Maoists had been unable to persuade other parties against the President's move. "It is an irony that the Maoists are still demanding that the President withdraw his decision," he added.
Stating that the UML-led government was formed on the basis of consensus, Nepal claimed that the government was capable of writing the new constitution on schedule and bringing the peace process to a logical end. He said that the continuing feud between the political parties had sent across a wrong message to the common people.
Nepal claimed that despite UML-led-government's flexible approach, the Maoists had been reluctant to forge consensus. "Improving security situation is the immediate priority of the government," he said, adding that the government would successfully draft the new constitution and hold general elections.
