RAUTAHAT, OCTOBER 12
The Special Court has convicted Phatuwa Bijayapur Municipality's then mayor Gopal Raya Yadav in a corruption case and slapped him with prison sentence and fine.
Elected twice to the mayoral post representing Nepali Congress, Yadav had a case filed over financial irregulari-ties during his first term in office by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority last year.
Delivering its verdict yesterday, the Special Court convicted the mayor and slapped him with three years of prison term and Rs 1.5 million in fine. The mayor has been facing suspension ever since the corruption case was filed against him at the Special Court. Though the case filed also had 20 others, including 18 people's representatives as defendants, they weren't considered guilty.
The corruption case against Yadav had to do with his role in scrapping a contract to extract river products.
The anti-graft body accused him of causing loss to the municipality by scrapping the contract to excavate river products from the Lal Bakaiya River.
