Mayor Rajendra Pokharel of Jhapa’s Kanakai Municipality has donated his one year’s salary amounting to Rs 340,000 to a workers’ welfare fund.

Mayor Pokharel had set up the fund after he assumed the post. “We aim to collect around Rs 50 million for the fund within five years. So far, we have collected over two million rupees,” he said. “Every worker in the municipality contribute a day’s salary to the fund every month. The fund has been set up to provide support to any worker who dies or is injured while working,” he added.

“As our old vehicle is working properly, we used the fund allocated for purchasing vehicle to construct a road,” said Pokharel.
