Medicine distribution
KATHMANDU: Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) under the Ministry of Health and Population is set to distribute medicine of Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis) in 30 districts across the nation. EDCD, under Mass Drugs Administration programme, is distributing the medicine in 19 districts on February 13 and 14 and in other 11 districts on February 20 and 21. Nepal has a target of eliminating the diseases by the end of 2015. Dr Vishwo Raj Khanal, senior epidemiologist, EDCD said that the drug programme had been introduced to interrupt the transmission of the disease and to reduce the morbidity due to the disease. Khanal maintained the disease has been recorded in 60 districts in Nepal. The target population of the programme this year is 13.5 million, he added. According to WHO, more than a billion people in around 83 countries are at the risk of the disease. Over 120 million have already been affected and over 40 million among them are seriously incapacitated and disfigured.
