Meet on regional flood forecasting

Kathmandu, March 15:

The Nepal National Consultation for the Establishment of a Regional Flood Information System in the Hind Kush Himalayan Region is beginning tomorrow. The meet is being organised by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology in cooperation with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development and the World Meteorological Organisation. The meet is sponsored by the US Department of State, Regional Environment Office for South Asia and the US Agency for International Development and Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance.

The objective of the National Consultation is to assess the current capacity and identify priorities for flood forecasting and information exchange in Nepal and to identify and select hydro-meteorological stations for exchange of real-time data and information in a regional framework with countries in the region. Key national organisations associated with water resources and disaster mitigation, international organisations, donor organisations, humanitarian organisations, academicians, INGOs, NGOs and media will attend the meet, a press statement issue by the American Center of the US Embassy said.

The meet will also discuss the technical capacities in data collection, acquisition, and dissemination for flood forecasting in Nepal.
