Meteor shower to illuminate Nepali sky

KATHMANDU: Meteor shower will light up the Nepali sky in the Nepali month Baisakh.

Two incidents of the amazing phenomenon will occur in Baisakh while one has to wait for the Nepali month of Kartik this year to view another similar spectacle, said Suresh Bhattarai, Chairman of the Nepal Astronomical Society.

The Lyrid meteor shower will become active from April 18 and continue till April 25, he said, adding that the activeness would go excessive at 9:45 pm on April 22 when 15 to 20 meteors would fall at the same time.

The appropriate time to view the amazing spectacle is from 9:45 pm on April 22 to 2:45 am on April 23 as new moon will start from April 26, he said.

He said Eta Aquarid meteor shower will occur on May 6 when more than 55 meteors will fall each hour from the southern hemisphere.

However, one could see the fall of only 10 to 30 meteors from Nepal, he said.
