KATHMANDU, MAY 26

Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is preparing to draft Animal Welfare Act soon.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister, Mahindra Raya Yadav shared that national animal welfare act is going to be drafted soon and will be passed from this parliament.

He committed this while addressing a gathering in Kathmandu on Tuesday during a national seminar entitled "Animal Welfare in Nepal; Present Context and way forward".

The programme, which was organized by Sneha's Care in collaboration with directorate of livestock and fisheries development, ministry of agriculture and livestock development was attended by officials from Agriculture and Livestock Development ministry, all the province ministries and several animal welfare organizations of the country.

During the programme, the officials also presented seven different thematic papers on overall animal welfare status in the country, its application on zoo, wildlife, farm animals and education system, perspectives as per world organization for animal health and existing legal framework in Nepal.

Similarly, two plenary sessions, one including representatives from all seven provincial ministries and department of livestock services and other including representatives from animal welfare organizations were also held.

The seminar also passed a declaration with the need of immediate formulation of national animal welfare act in Nepal.

In the program which was chaired by director of directorate of livestock and fisheries development, Bagmati Pradesh Dr Mogal Shah, chairman of Nepal Veterinary Council Dr Braj Kishore Prasad Shah and founder of Sneha's Care Sneha Shrestha highlighted over the need to improvise the animal welfare status in the country and stressed for the promulgation of national animal welfare act at the earliest.
