KATHMANDU, MAY 25

With the arrival of the pre-monsoon season, the onset of the monsoon is drawing near. As many as two million people from 450,000 households are likely to be affected by this year's monsoon.

This projection is outlined in the proposed Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan 2082 BS, which was drafted after a comprehensive analysis of relevant data from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Ram Bahadur KC, Spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), told RSS that the action plan anticipates that approximately 10 percent of the affected population may require rescue and relief support.

"We estimate that around two million people will be impacted by the upcoming monsoon. All provinces are expected to be affected, and responsibilities for preparedness have been delegated across sectors," KC said.

He further shared that the action plan will be presented at the executive committee meeting of the NDRRMA, scheduled for May 28 under the chairmanship of the Home Minister. It will come into effect following formal endorsement from the meeting.

KC added that the proposed plan includes provisions for monthly monitoring, evaluation, and review of disaster situations.

Earlier, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had issued its seasonal forecast, predicting extreme rainfall, with lower-than-average minimum temperatures and higher-than-average maximum temperatures.

Based on these forecasts and in consultation with stakeholders and partner organizations, the NDRRMA has developed the national disaster response plan to better prepare for potential impacts during the monsoon season.
