KATHMANDU, AUGUST 3
A Nepal Airlines flight scheduled to leave for Mumbai from Kathmandu today at 1:15pm was delayed by almost two hours after police were informed of a theft accused on the flight.
According to Nepal Airlines Corporation Spokesperson Archana Khadka, 127 passengers were scheduled to go to Mumbai on a narrow body aircraft of the corporation.
"The plane departed for its destination after a delay of almost two hours after offloading the suspicious person and his spouse," Khadka said.
According to Deputy Inspector General and Spokesperson for Nepal Police Tek Prasad Rai, police acted on information received from Kailali District Police about a person accused of theft who was on board the aircraft.
"The theft accused and another person travelling with him are in police custody and will be sent to Kailali for further investigation," DIG Rai told THT.
The arrested person, Santosh Lamichhane of Kailali, has been accused of stealing gold in India along with a few others. He is a gold and silver trader.
"We had made an official request to the airport to take him into custody," Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kailali Dev Joshi said.
Through coordination with the police office at the airport and the NAC, the airlines was asked to delay the flight before arresting Lamichhane, he said.
Lamichhane has been kept at the Gaushala Police Office and preparations are under way to send him to Kailali for further investigations, he said.
