Nakkhu jail inmates demand amnesty

Lalitpur, June 3:

Most of the inmates of the Nakkhu prison today voted in favour of a republican set-up as against constitutional monarchy in a mock referendum held as a part of their protest programmes.

According to Ashok Subedi, joint secretary of the struggle committee, 92.33 per cent of the total 281 votes were cast in favour of a republican set-up, while 5.22 per cent votes were cast in favour of ceremonial monarchy.

Subedi said the inmates would celebrate the victory tomorrow and the Nakkhu Prison would be declared a republican prison.

“A torch rally would be organised on the jail premises on Tuesday, copies of the Muluki Ain and Prison Management Act would be burnt on Wednesday and slogans would be chanted through loud speakers in the midnight for one week beginning Friday to press the authorities to announce amnesty for all inmates here,” Subedi further said.
