Tanker-hit kills one

MORANG: A man was killed when a tanker knocked him while he was sleeping in a wooden hut at Gangachowk in Biratnagar-5 of Morang district along the East-West Highway on Friday night. Krishna Hari Shrestha, 70, died in the incident, said Morang District Police Office. The tanker (Ko 1 Kha 2089), coming through the north rammed into the hut as the driver was in his inebriated state. The driver has been absconding following the incident.

Prison sans chief

LAMJUNG: Lamjung district prison chief Haris Chandra Poudel has been absent in his office from the past few months. The Home Ministry had deployed Poudel here from Pokhara, but he is yet to assume his office. Consequently, three peons have been carrying out all the duties here in the prison. Peon Sunita Tamang said they were facing problems in handling administrative and legal works owing to the absence of the responsible official. There are 25 jailbirds, including two women in the prison. CDO Bishnu Prasad Pokhrel said he already informed the authority concerned about the problem many times, but in vain.

Locals clash with cops

BARA: More than a dozen people were injured in a clash that took place between local residents and police after the latter went to retrieve stolen motorcycles in Kabahigoth-1 of the district on Saturday. The villagers, alleging that the police arrested an innocent Panna Lal Yadav, pelted stones at them. As a result, the police personnel sustained injuries. Those injured include police sub-inspector Bijaya Yadav, head constable Birendra Yadav, constable Ram Binaya Yadav, Dipak Khatri, Chandan Shaha, Umesh Yadav, Ananda Malla, Dev Narayan Mahato and Dipendra Singh. Naresh Thapa of the Armed Police Force was also injured in the melee. An equal number of villagers were also injured in the incident. The situation in Kabahigoth is now normal, police said.
