NC district chiefs want final word on monarchy

Kathmandu, May 5:

NC district presidents today told the party leadership to make NC’s stance clear on monarchy on the second day of the three-day conclave. The meeting funded by the National Democratic Institute is ending tomorrow after presenting a report to the leadership.

The call to this effect has come from several district unit chiefs of the party who wanted to hear from the central leadership as to what exactly should they go back with once the conclave is over.

Some speakers said the party will lose its credibility if it does not come up with its stance of monarchy. Others said the party should go ahead with the idea of retaining monarchy in ceremonial form if it thinks that is the best thing to do.

Some other district chiefs said that if the leadership is really keen to know what the rank and file has to say on monarchy, the best thing they could do is go ahead and declare a republic any time.

Others said the idea of telling the masses that the fate of the monarchy will be decided by the first meeting of the constituent assembly is a bad thing to do since people will be wanting to know what the NC has to say on monarchy in the first place.

Others said the party should come to a decision on the fate of monarchy before CA polls.

Since the second day was also dedicated to presentation of papers on democracy and constitutionalism, some said that rather than discussing issues which are best left for intellectual sessions the party should initiate discussion into fate of monarchy.
