Need for quality food in global market stressed

KATHMANDU: Food scientists and technologists have underlined the need to ensure the safety and quality of food in the market. They also maintained that the country has still a long way to go to boost its competitive edge in the global market.

Speaking at a function organised in the capital to mark the silver Jubilee celebration of Nepal Food Scientists and Technologists Association, Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong appealed to all to boost Nepal's global image as an agricultural country.

"The government in association with experts concerned will leave no stone unturned to encourage the agricultural sector and food industry. We are with you to pave way for a niche in global market and ensure food safety," he argued. "But, complete peace is a primary requirement for the purpose".

Dr Jagat Bahadur KC, an expert, said that Nepal was in dire need of adequate strength of researchers and experts to boost food science.

"Nepal is dubbed as an agricultural country but only on paper as majority of the population is yet to be well informed about food science and technology in today's competitive world. We call on the government to advocate for food safety by encouraging food scientists to lead the campaign," he argued.

Dr Kedar Narsingh KC, a medical doctor said, “Food safety comes first after medicines. The medical doctors and food scientists will have to work hand in hand to make Nepal healthier place to live in.”
