KATHMANDU, AUGUST 12

Nepal Bar Council has changed the syllabus of its licensing examination, which NBC says will become applicable from next year.

NBC member Senior Advocate Chandra Kanta Gyawali said at a programme organised to mark the 30th anniversary of NBC that the council was working with the prime focus on improving legal education and protecting the interests of lawyers.

According to Gyawali, the new syllabus has been designed with the objective of making the new advocates aware of both theoretical and practical knowledge. Those that pass the licensing exam will have to engage in a three-month internship with senior advocates. He said the NBC had alos made provisions whereby those lawyers who were not paying taxes to the government wouldn't be able to get their licenses renewed. Currently around 12,000 lawyers have come under the tax net.

Gyawali said that the NBC had sought Rs 70 million budget from the government for its activities, but the government provided just 1.2 million rupees.

Acting Chief Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha attended the prorgramme as chief guest. Attorney General Dinmani Pokharel, Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla, Nepal Bar Association President Gopal Krishna Ghimire and advocates and senior advocates also attended the programme.
