KATHMANDU, JANUARY 30

The Consulate General of Nepal in New York has issued an urgent notice warning Nepali citizens residing in the United States against illegally accessing public benefits and misusing visa conditions, stating that such actions could lead to visa or Green Card cancellation.

According to the notice, U.S. authorities have informed that foreign nationals who provide false or misleading information to obtain benefits meant for U.S. citizens, such as subsidized healthcare, housing, family assistance, or educational support, may face direct legal consequences affecting their immigration status.

The consulate noted that data from Nepali citizens who traveled to the U.S. in 2024 show Nepalis among the top groups availing subsidized services, prompting the U.S. government to issue a public notice temporarily suspending immigrant visas for Nepali nationals.

In addition, citing cases of overstaying and unauthorized employment by Nepali nationals on B1/B2 visas, the U.S. government has introduced a visa bond requirement ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 15,000, effective January 21, 2026.

The consulate warned that continued violations could further tighten U.S. visa policies toward Nepal, making visa approval more difficult and harming the country's international image. It urged all Nepali citizens in the United States to strictly comply with U.S. laws, avoid dependence on unauthorized public assistance, and refrain from misuse of visa privileges.
