KATHMANDU: India on Tuesday announced that it would honour Nepal's anti-girls trafficking crusader Anuradha Koirala with Padma Shri award in recognition of her social work. She is one among 89 Padma awardees this year.

Koirala is the first Nepali citizen to get the prestigious Indian honour.

Sikkim-based writer, poet and musician Birkha Bahadur Limboo Muringla, who is of Nepali origin, also would get the Padhma Shri for his contribution to "Literature and Education".

Koirala is the founder of Maiti Nepal, which has been working to prevent and rescue Nepali girls and women from domestic violence, cross-border sex trafficking, child prostitution, child labour and various forms of other exploitation and torture. It also provides rehabilitation to the victims.

Muringla had designed the syllabus in ethnic Limbu language for the government schools in Sikkim. In recognition of his contribution to literature and music, Nepali Sahitya Parishad had honoured him with the Bhanu Puraskar last year.

Founded in 1993, Maiti Nepal currently has three prevention homes, 11 transit homes, two hospices and a formal school. More than 1000 children are receiving direct services from Maiti Nepal every day, according to its website.

The announcement for Padma awards -- Padma Vibhushan (7), Padma Bhushan (7) and Padma Shri (75)---- was made today on the eve of India's Republic Day.

The President of India would confer the prestigious award on Koirala along with other recipients amid a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi later in March or April.

This year the President of India approved conferment of Padma awards to 89 persons, including Koirala in foreign category, according to India's Ministry of Home Affairs.

Six people are being honoured posthumously.

Earlier, Koirala had won the CNN Hero award in 2010.
