KATHMANDU: The US Department of State has honoured Superintendent of Nepal Police Kiran Bajracharya, as a 2016 Trafficking in Persons Report Hero.

The US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report annually honours individuals from around the globe against the collective and organised transnational human trafficking.

Bajracharya, currently the Chief of Bhaktapur District Police Office, was among 8 persons honoured for working persistently to investigate crimes against women and children, including human trafficking.

This year’s Report has underscored the need for increased attention to preventing human trafficking. It has likewise encouraged governments to identify and acknowledge those most-at-risk in society, and to create effective ways to recognise vulnerable populations and help the first responders spot the methods used by human traffickers, the US Secretary of State John Kerry was quoted in the report as saying.

The Nepali policewoman had led efforts to identify trafficking victims at local hotels and restaurants in past few years.

Likewise, she had developed a training manual for junior officers on investigating crimes against women and children, while working constantly to ensure the integration of human rights standards, police ethics, and gender equality into police curricula and training programmes, according to the US Department of State.
