NWA's third general convention kicks off

KATHMANDU: The third general convention of the Nepal Women Association (NWA) -- a sister organisation of the Nepali Congress -- kicked off in the capital on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the convention, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba said that women representation should be elevated in the local, provincial and central level elections.

The NC President also lauded the NWA's role in women rights and liberation issues since its establishment in late 1940s.

The party's senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel stressed the need of implementing the Constitution to institutionalise the rights bestowed to women.

"There should be 33 per cent women participation in the Council of Ministers. Likewise, the constitutional provision should be kept in mind while appointing ambassadors and members of the National Planning Commission," Paudel said.

As many as 2,200 delegates would take part in the general convention, which would conclude on Friday, with the election from new leadership.

The closed session of the NWA convention is scheduled to start at 9:00 am on Thursday.
