Nepalgunj clash victims stage sit-in

Nepalgunj, March 28:

Victims of the Nepalgunj incident that occurred between December 25 and 28 today staged a three-hour sit-in at the Banke District Administration Office (DAO) to demand compensation for damages caused by violence unleashed by the Nepal Sadbhawana Party-Anandidevi (NSP-A) and Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF). Cadres of the NSP-A and MJF had clashed with locals then.

During the sit-in, they displayed different placards from 11:00 am till 2:00 pm demanding compensation, punishment to the guilty and making public the report of the judicial commission.

One person was killed, dozens others were injured and property worth tens of millions of rupees was destroyed in the incident. The victims said except for Rs 3 million, which was provided to them in the beginning as compensation, the government had done nothing.

Dilli Bikram Malla, a victimised businessman, who participated in the sit-in organised by the Nepalgunj Chambers of Commerce and Industries (NCCI) agitation committee, said the agitation was launched after the government failed to show any concern for the victims even after three months of the incident.

The sit-in programme was participated in by office-bearers of the NCCI and other entrepreneurs. The protesters denied the DAO staff entry into the office during the sit-in. They have been flying black flags in protest atop the Chambers office and on their own office buildings since the last few days.
