Nepalis can monitor arms themselves: Sherchan

Kathmandu, August 8:

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan today said Nepali people should monitor arms of the Maoists and the Nepali army if the United Nations refuses to come here for arms monitoring.

“We can solve our problem ourselves even if the UN does not come here,” he said, adding that representatives of local human rights organisations, legal practitioners, indigenous nationalities and intellectuals would be mobilised for arms monitoring.

Sherchan was addressing the closing ceremony of a two-day Broad National Political Conference held by Indigenous Nationalities Peace Commission Nepal. Efforts are under way to sort out differences between the Maoists and the government and send a joint letter to the UN, he said. “We may send a letter to the UN by Wednesday.” “The CA will decide who should be kept and who should be ousted,” he said, stressing the need to reach a political agreement before tackling the issue of arms management. The national political conference concluded today, issuing a four-point Kathmandu declaration on women, indigenous nationalities, Dalits and youths. According to the declaration, the front will launch a nationwide campaign with the objective of making the indigenous nationalities, Dalits, women and Madhesi people aware of the issue pertaining to the CA. The front will advocate for a democratic republic in the country and abolition of monarchy.

A 25-member Broad National Democratic-Republican Front Nepal has been formed under the leadership of Parsuram Tamang.
