Nepalis in US stage demonstrations against Indo-Nepal border blockade

KATHMANDU: Nepalis living in the United States on Sunday staged protests in Washington DC, the US Capital, against the unofficial blockade imposed by India at the Indo-Nepal border points.

Organisations representing Nepali diaspora had staged protests in front of the White House from 11 am to 3 pm yesterday, according to the Rastriya Samachar Samiti.

As many as 4,000 Nepalis were present in the protest and it was the largest demonstration carried out by US-living Nepalis, according to the RSS.

The protesters also staged a rally from the White House to the US-based Indian Embassy.

Meanwhile, Association of Nepalis in America would submit a memorandum to the US President Barack Obama urging him to speak against the blockade.

The protesters claimed the blockade was against Nepal’s transport rights as a land-locked nation and related international trade laws and treaties.

Earlier in November, Nepalis in the United Kingdom had staged a large protest in front of visiting Indian PM Narendra Modi.

Nepali communities living in other nations as well have staged protests in various parts of the world.

Separate demonstration of Madhesis

Meanwhile, people from the Madhesi community living in the States held a separate protest in front of the White House.

They chanted various slogans including "Down with terrorist government", "we want justice" and "stop killing" against the use of force to contain the ongoing agitation in Tarai districts in Nepal.

Madhesi Human Rights (MADHUR) and Association of Nepalese Teraian in America (ANTA) had led the protest.
