Nepalis will decide their own constitution: Krishna
KATHMANDU: India's External Affairs Minister SM Krishna today said that India would have no role to decide on what kind of constitution should Nepal made and added that it was up to Nepali people and leaders to decide on it.
Talking to Constituent Assembly (CA) chairman Subas Nembang and other CA members separately at International Convention Centre, this morning, Krishna said that solutions to the political problems, including the writing of the constitution and the peace process, should be sought from within Nepal.
As there was no universally accepted modality of a constitution, Nepal could make constitution which suits best for the country, he said.
"My visit went to be fruitful and I am going back fully satisfied. India wish to see that Nepal could promulgate the new constitution by May 28, 2010 deadline," he said, emerging out of the meeting with Nembang and CA members.
Asked if the CA deadline could not be met, he said, "That is up to the decision of Nepali leaders. India can do nothing on that." About the modality of new constitution, he said that it depended upon the wisdom of Nepali political parties and leaders.
He informed Nembang that India wanted timely statute and was ready to assist on the constitution writing process. Nembang, after the meeting, informed that Krishna had expressed his optimism that Nepal's political parties would be able to write the new constitution on time.
