New statute for ‘inclusive democracy’

Kathmandu, August 1:

Leaders of seven agitating parties and a former judge, speaking at a function today, said the new constitution to be drafted through the poll to a constituent assembly should made democracy-inclusive and the state mechanism should be restructured. CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said the statute should ensure nobody is above law. Nepal said the King’s role, army and ways of tackling possible armed revolt were discussed while drafting the statute. While NC spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC said a new constitution would limit the King’s power, Lilamani Pokharel of JMN said the new statute would bring the army under civilian control. Former justice Nilambar Acharya said the country was facing instability because of the army’s loyalty to the King.
