NHRC seeks punitive rights

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today demanded to the government to provide it with punitive rights to take action against those involved in human rights violations.

Submitting a six-point recommendation to the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the national human rights watchdog also urged the government to ensure its independence as per the Paris Principle.

The NHRC urged the government to incorporate the provision in the Interim Constitution of Nepal-2007,ensuring its independence and punitive rights, and making it compatible with the new amendment of the National Human Rights Commission Act, 1997.

The constitutional rights body also recommended the government to increase

the compensation amount given away to the victims of rights violations from Rs 3 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs.
