NHRC starts probing custody deaths

PHIDIM: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun investigating a case in which one Dal Bahadur Magar and his son Bikram Gyangmi, who were detained for their involvement in a theft in the village, died in police custody.

A team led by Arjun Koirala, rights protection officer at the NHRC Eastern Regional Office, Biratnagar, started collecting information from the duo’s relatives, eyewitnesses and others. Bikram had succumbed to injuries at the BPKIHS in Dharan on February 20, while Dil Bahadur had died at the Prangbung Police Post on February 13. The relatives of the duo accused the police tortured them excessively in custody.
