KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 3
The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has embarked on a mission to carry the Peace Torch from the sacred birthplace of Buddha in Lumbini to the majestic heights of Kala Patthar. This symbolic journey aims to shed light on the pressing issue of climate change's impact on the Himalayas, capturing global attention and advocating for urgent climate action.
In an event held in Lumbini on Friday morning, Dr. Lharkyal Lama, Chairman of the Lumbini Development Trust, handed over the torch to former Secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Association and central committee member, Dibas Pokhrel, Shiva Bahadur Sapkota, General Secretary of the Everest Summiteers Association, and Kaji Sherpa, a world record holder in Everest climbing.
The Peace Torch, initially taken from Lumbini, will journey to Kathmandu, where it will illuminate iconic sites such as Swyambhu and Bauddha. The next destination on its itinerary is Kala Patthar, a historic location where a cabinet meeting took place in 2009. On November 11, the torch will light up Kala Patthar, drawing global attention to the dire consequences of climate change in the Himalayan region.
This initiative coincides with the 50th annual event organized by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, showcasing their commitment to raising awareness about the profound impact of climate change on the Himalayas and advocating for global peace. The program will also include the waving of the national flag to symbolize unity and solidarity in the face of climate challenges.
Dr. Lama emphasized the significance of addressing climate change's repercussions, noting that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concerns about the Himalayan region during his recent visit. Dr. Lama underscored the shared responsibility of individuals and nations to confront these environmental challenges, making this symbolic journey an essential step in that direction.
