‘No child will be deprived of education’

Kathmandu, April 14

Addressing the nation from Rara Lake of Mugu today Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that no children would be deprived of education from now onwards. PM has said this just before the beginning of new academic session. New session of schools is beginning from tomorrow.

“No students should be deprived of education just because of poverty,” he said.

PM Oli will personally help a student of underprivileged community from Karnali to get enrolled at the local school as a part of student enrolment campaign, which the government launched today.

Earlier, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology launched the student enrolment campaign. The ministry has urged peoples’ representatives from local levels, provincial and federal governments to take the guardianship of at least one student.

The constitution of Nepal has provisioned for free and compulsory education. But, according to a report of the Department of Education, around three per cent of child aged between five and nine years are deprived of education in the country. Similarly, around eight per cent students between five and 12 years of age do not go to schools.

According to educationist Bidhya Nath Koirala, campaign to enrol 100 per cent students can be successful only if local levels are mobilised effectively. “The effort from the central government will always look like a publicity stunt unless the local bodies are given the responsibility to enrol students,” he said.
