No good year for cardamom farmers of Lamjung as price plunges two-fold

LAMJUNG: Cardamom farmers in Lamjung district were bound to sell their produces in half the price as compared to last year, District Agriculture Office (DAO) informed.

Last year, the farmers were able to bring in revenue of Rs 130 million. However, total sales has plunged to Rs 50 million this year after price of cardamom plummeted from Rs 1100-1400 to Rs 600-700.

Despite a high demand for cardamom produced in Lamjung district, the farmers were unable to distribute the cash crop in expected prices.

In this backdrop, the Lamjung Chapter of Large Cardamom Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal has said that preparations were ongoing to export Cardamom to other markets along with Indian markets.

According to official statistics, there are 36,000 agro-entrepreneurs in Lamjung District who cultivate large cardamom in around 650 hectares of land, annually.
