KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 16

Public vehicles will not operate in Kathmandu valley on November 20, the day the House of Representatives and provincial assemblies go to polls. The operation of vehicles has been banned in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur in a bid to help maintain peace and security during the elections.

Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Ghanashyam Upadhyaya said a joint meeting of the chief district officers of the three districts held today decided to prohibit the operation of vehicles as per the standards of the Election Commission on polling day.

He mentioned that no other vehicles would be allowed to operate except for vehicles approved by the Election Commission. It has been decided to stop vehicular traffic in the valley from 4:00am to 7:00pm on polling day.

"A decision has been taken to close all three district administration services on November 17 and 18 except for essential services," he said.

The meet also decided to manage vehicles and ban the transport, sale and consumption of alcohol. Likewise, vehicles for essential services such as water supply, electricity, ambulance and fire engine will be allowed to operate.
