No rice for locals of far-west hills this Dashain

DHANGADHI: The Dashain this year is being celebrated with a slight difference in the hilly districts of far-western Nepal.

Nepalis of this remote region are now prepared for the festival without a mouthful of rice in their kitchen after the transport supply has been obstructed.

The roads to the hilly regions of Darchula, Bajura and Humla could not be reopened after the damage incurred in the last monsoon season.

“Rice is Rs 160 per kilogram here”, a lamenting local customer in Kanda of Bajhang said with reddened eyes.

Earlier, the Nepal Food Corporation had directed concerned authorities to supply the food to fulfill demands of the locals during the Dashain, but to no avail so far as it could not reach the waiting needy.

“We could not manage to store the foodstuff for immediate need as the road was obstructed from too early” said Chief District Officer of Darchula, Mohan Joshi.

For the want of rice, they have collected yams, nettles among others for this Dashain, said local Ram Bahadur Bohra of Kanda-3.

“Yes, no rice for us this Dashain,” he added.
