NOC enforces quota refueling amid supply crisis

KATHMANDU: In view of the ongoing fuel crisis across the country as transport entrepreneurs halt supply, the Nepal Oil Corporation has initiated quota refueling system to address the demand for fuel, effective from today.

The state owned entity has directed the fuel stations to refuel motorcycles and scooters with 5 litres of petrol per vehicle, while light weight vehicles, cars and vans will be refueled with a maximum of 15 litres of fuel.

Likewise, NOC has requested to provide 50 litres of diesel to vehicles plying short distances and a maximum of 100 litres to vehicles covering long distances.

Similarly, NOC has directed the petrol pumps to keep ambulances, school buses, and government vehicles on priority and refuel them accordingly.

Fuel stations have been facing shortage of petroleum products since fuel tanker operators started halting fuel supply, expressing solidarity with the protest initiated by transporters against a few transport-related provisions in the recently enacted Criminal Code.

A group of transport entrepreneurs, especially those operating tankers, have been staging protest since Tuesday against provisions in the penal code, including 10-year imprisonment for accidents and life imprisonment for causing death.

Should the protest by transport entrepreneurs prolong, the fuel supply situation will deteriorate further, as Nepal Oil Corporation has limited stock of fuel — 45,000 kilolitres of petrol and diesel, which is sufficient to address the demand for less than a week.
