KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 1
The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Thailand, in coordination with the Embassy of Nepal in Thailand, has delivered emergency relief supplies to families affected by severe flooding in Songkhla Province.
The handover took place on Thursday when an NRNA Thailand delegation met Khuan Lang Municipality Mayor Sombun Panyathanakorn in Hat Yai District to provide food items, water and hygiene materials for immediate distribution to flood-hit households.
The flooding, triggered by days of incessant rainfall, has inundated major residential and commercial areas across Hat Yai, severely disrupting transport, electricity supply and daily life. Local emergency teams have been operating under immense pressure as several neighbourhoods remain waterlogged.
The relief initiative was led by NRNA Thailand President Mahendra Shrestha, accompanied by NRNA ICC Member Bhabindra Basnet, Senior Vice President Gabo Gurung, Vice Presidents Raju Balami and Sang Gurung, and Secretary Raj Bahadur Saud. The group visited local authorities, assessed the damage, and coordinated the delivery of essential goods through the municipal office.
According to NRNA ICC senior Vice President Gabo Gurung, the relief materials were funded through contributions from Nepali residents in Thailand and supporters from Nepali communities worldwide, reflecting broad solidarity with the affected population in southern Thailand.
Local officials thanked the Nepali community for the timely assistance, noting that the support brought "new hope amid difficult days." The association said it stands ready to mobilise additional resources if the situation worsens.
Hat Yai continues to face significant challenges, with many residents displaced and shortages of clean water, sanitation and basic supplies. Schools, shops and offices remain closed as the region waits for floodwaters to recede, Gabo Gurung added.
