KATHMANDU, JANUARY 16
"For every run scored in the tournament, a tree will be planted," said the Spokesperson of Nepal Students Union, Suraj Sejuwal.
Sejuwal emphasised that climate change has been adversely impacting snow-capped mountains in Nepal. "And we must echo the concerns of mountains to the world, and cricket is one of the cogs in the wheel," he added.
As a result, NSU took the initiative to organise an inter-university cricket competition. According to Sejuwal, eight teams from three nations, including Nepal, India and Bangladesh are participating in the competition.
"This initiative is expected to bring massive awareness among youth for climate actions," he said.
"Moreover, it would also contribute immensely to the growth of cricket in Nepal. And the message that we are attempting to spread is invaluable, as we will be combating the pressing issue of climate change."
The prize pool totals Rs 3 million, which has been divided into various categories. Winners would receive 1.5 million and runner-up would get one million. Likewise, best performers (which includes bowlers and batsmen) will be awarded Rs 500,000.
According to NSU, Nima Rinji Sherpa, the youngest climber to summit all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks, has been named the brand ambassador for the International Inter-University Cricket Championship.
"Nima's journey represents resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a difference-values that resonate with this historic event," the organisers stated.
"The T20 Jay Nepal Cup, which features three nations, eight teams, and one historic trophy, is more than just a cricket tournament; it is a movement that brings sportsmanship together with a call to action on climate change," said NSU president Dujang Sherpa.
"This tournament has been organised to connect grassroot cricket with the ultimate challenge, climate change, with the slogan 'T20 Jay Nepal Cup: One Earth, One Voice.'
He further said, "To draw the attention of the relevant countries and agencies, we will also be performing acts. The proceeds from the tournament will be used to help earthquake victims and build school buildings in Jajarkot."
