NSU poll process kicks off

185 candidates in the fray for 28 positions

The process of electing the president and other members of the Nepal Students’ Union got underway today.

The 10th general convention of the NSU has been going on here.

The party sorted out a dispute over the selection of representatives to the general convention through discussions with the parties concerned, said a leader. The closed-door session of the student body resumed after the resolution of the dispute.

The closed-door session began at 7:30 pm and ended at 8:30 pm. Twenty-eight posts are up for grabs in the NSU and 185 people are contesting for them.

With the dispute resolved, the candidates have started campaigning.

According to the election commission, 15 persons, including a woman, Sirjana Adhikari, have filed their candidatures for the post of president. A total of 170 candidates are eyeing 27 other positions.

Laxman Dhakal, Devendra Poudel, Pradip Poudel, Bikas Koirala, Ranjit Karna, Badri Aryal, Basudev Koirala, Badri Pandey, Tek Raj Poudel, Dipak Aryal, Sagar Khanal, Kshitiz Bhandari, Padam Raj pant and Modin Sitaula are other presidential candidates.

Twenty-nine candidates are fighting for four positions in the eastern region, 47 candidates for six positions in the central region, 30 candidates for four positions in the western region, 17 candidates for four positions in the mid-western region and 22 candidates are fighting for three positions in the far-western region.

Six candidates are fighting for a technical position and two candidates for a position in the external department.

There are 17 candidates for four positions allotted for women.

The candidates can withdraw their candidatures till tomorrow morning. Polls will be held once the final list of candidates is published.
