OHCHR lauds quota in police
Kathmandu, October 22:
UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Nepal office today lauded the cabinet decision to reserve seats for women and people from marginalised community in Nepal
Police and the Armed Police Force.
On October 17, the cabinet sanctioned the recruitment of 2,000 personnel for Nepal Police, with 45 per cent reservation for various groups and regions.
Twenty per cent of the reserved seat will be for women, 32 per cent for indigenous nationalities, 28 per cent for Madhesis, 15 per cent for Dalits and five per cent for backward classes .
A statement issued by the Nepal representative of the commission Richard Bennett, reads, “This is a welcome step which shows the political leaders’ commitment to inclusion of the marginased communities into the police force and public service commission. This will also meet a few demands of those communities, which will facilitate the peace process and constituent assembly polls.”
