No trace of climber

KATHMANDU: French mountaineer Jean Christophe Lafaille attempting a solo climb of Mt Makalu is yet to be located. The search and rescue team that flew to Lukla base camp on Tuesday could not locate him, said the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. The ministry said the French climber has not been in contact for the last three days. Meanwhile, French officials at Grenoble told AFP that the chances of Lafaille’s survival were extremely low. — HNS

3-month detention

BARA: The president of the CPN-UML-affiliated ANNFSU,Bara, Jawahir Ansari, has been handed a three-month detention notice and sent to prison by the District Security Committee. He is now imprisoned at the Birgunj jail. The security personnel had arrested Ansari from Kalaiya on Tuesday. — HNS

House bombed

Dang: Maoists detonated a bomb in the house of a mayoral candidate of the Dang’s Tulsipur Municipality, Yamendra Oli on Tuesday night. According to Oli’s father, Lalitbahadur Oli, a group of 15-20 Maoists descended on the house before effecting the blast. Yamindra is the brother of folk singer, Komal Oli. — HNS

Maoist killed

CHITWAN: A suspected Maoist was killed in a security operation near Munalchowk, Bharatpur-12, on Tuesday. The security forces captured another Maoist. The deceased has been identified as Maoist Commander Rishi Lamichhane and the one held as Ram Prasad Kadariya. — HNS

Police action flayed

KATHMANDU: The International Human Rights and Duties Institution Nepal (IHARDIN) has condemned the detention and beating up of a driver of the managing director of the International Media Network Nepal for no reason. IHRADIN called on the police authorities to take “the str-ongest possible action against the defaulters to set an example in the police circle” so that such human rights violations are not repeated in the future. — HNS

Four scribes held

Dharan: Police intervened in the “poem recitation” programme for democracy organised by the Joint Forum of Democratic Litterateurs and arrested five persons, including four journalists of Sunsari, on Tuesday. The arrested journalists are Rajesh Bidrohi, Janak Rishi Rai and Bhim Rai Jwala. Meanwhile, police raided the office of the local daily Narayani on Monday night. Police entered the office to arrest Shyam Banjara, the editor, but he was not there. — HNS
