Mudslide kills one

RAUTAHAT: One Sheikh Basim, 20, of Phatuwa Maheshpur VDC-6 of Rautahat died on Monday after getting buried in a mudslide. Basim had gone to a nearby field to dig soil when he was buried alive, the District Police Office said. The dead body was handed over to the family after a post mortem at District Hospital at Gaur, police said. —HNS

Poll office bombed

BARDIYA: The Maoists exploded a bomb in the district election office located at the district headquarters of Bardiya, Gulariya, on Monday evening. The locals around the office said the explosion caused much damage to the office. The election office was shifted near to the district police office after the Maoists had damaged the election office building in an explosion last year. The election office is located near the district police office. —HNS

Maoists block road

BARDIYA: Hundreds of vehicles remained stuck on either side of the Kohalpur-Karnali road section of the East West Mahendra Highway and passengers of these vehicles were stranded as the Maoists blocked the road section for five hours to organise a programme. Banke-Bardiya in-charge of the party, Athak, had addressed the programme. A district-based security source said it had received information that the vehicular movement resumed after a few hours. — HNS

One held with hashish

NAWALPARASI: Rajendra Agrahari, a resident of Banjariya VDC-6, was arrested with one kg of hashish from Maheshpur while he was about to smuggle the narcotic substance into India on Monday, police inspector at the Nawalparasi District Police Office, Deepak Adhikari, said. — HNS

DHADING: The Dhading-based Trafficking in Girls and Prostitution Control Task Force organised a seminar on Eradication and Minimisation of Worst Forms of Child Labour on Sunday. Forest blaze

ILAM: Hundreds of hectares of government forest in Chhintapu forest north of Ilam have been destroyed as the forest fire started four days ago continues to rage. No attempts have been made from any quarters so far to bring the fire under control in Chhintapu forest. The forest is rich in bio-diversity as well as herbal plants and is an important habitat for rare animals. Locals here believe that the forest fire spread from Sidin of Paanchthari. Acting Forest officer Yubraj Maskey said the District Forest Office has no information about the forest fire. — RSS

Workshop concludes

GAIGHAT: A one-day district-level review workshop organised by the Dalit and Indigenous Coordination Committee, Udaypur, concluded here on Monday. At the programme, 15 participating organisations presented their working papers in the concerned areas and pointed out the problems in bringing the indigenous communities together to finalise programmes for their uplift.— RSS

Maoist surrenders

DAMAULI: Thirty-six-year-old Shiv Raj Ghimire, a Maoist cadre, surrendered himself before to the District Administration Office in Tanahun in the presence of a media person on Sunday. According to the office, Ghimire regretted his involvement in the Maoist activities and promised to lead a normal life. — RSS

Convention ends

RASUWA: The First Convention of the Gurung community ( Tamu Chhoja Dhi) concluded here on Saturday. The two-day convention was organised here with a view to bringing together people of Gurung community scattered all over the district and protecting culture and language of this community. Central advisor of the Gurung Community, Mohan Gurung, inaugurated the convention while calling on the community to unite to save the nation. Other speakers also expressed their views on conservation of Gurung community and its responsibilities. Meanwhile, a 13-member (Tamu Chhoj Dhi) district executive committee was constituted during the convention. — RSS

Minister’s call

DAMAULI: Central Member of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Durga Shrestha, has called on all political parties to take part in the upcoming municipal polls. At a get- together programme of party workers held here on Sunday, she said nobody should shy away from the elections as it is the only medium to provide an outlet to the crisis the country is facing. Shrestha also recommended that a monitoring committee be constituted at district level to ensure free and fair elections. — RSS

NC cadre refuses post

Bara: The Nepali Congress Bara constituency number 2 representative Umesh Lal Das turned down the position offered him to become a guest member of the Nepali Congress’ Bara district executive committee. In a letter, Das said he was not consulted prior to nominating him to the post. The nomination process was preferred by the central level at a time when the Bara district convention was yet to convene in accordance with the NC election regulations, Das said in his letter. It is morally wrong to stay in the executive committee formed illegitimately, he said. Das was nominated a guest member of the executive committee. —HNS
