Two killed in mishaps
POKHARA: Eleven-year-old Narayan Gurung was killed en route to hospital after being hit by a truck at Yamdi, Hemja VDC, on Saturday, police said. Gurung was critically injured after taking the hit. The truck and the driver are in police custody, police said. In a separate incident, an unidentified person was killed on Saturday night at Basantapur chowk of Santapur VDC in Rautahat district after being run over by a tractor, Area Police Office, Chandranigahapur, said. — HNS
Poll officers insured
Kathmandu: The Election Commission (EC) has insured the civil servants to be assigned for the local elections slated for February 8. Accordingly, gazetted officers carry an insurance amount worth Rs 700,000 while the insurance amount for the non-gazetted employees is Rs 500,000. This was disclosed by Chief Election Commissioner Keshav Raj Rajbhandari at a meeting on Sunday of the employees of the Commission and secretaries of the government. — RSS
72-party meet
KATHMANDU: The Home Ministry hosted an all-party meeting on Sunday with the objective of collecting suggestions and recommendations from the 72 political parties registered at the Election Commission for the the upcoming elections scheduled for February 8. On the occasion, Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers Dr Tusli Giri said as per the directive of the King the elections would be held in a peaceful manner. Home Minister Kamal Thapa said the government has been making all preparations essential for holding the elections in a peaceful, independent and impartial manner. — RSS
Envoy meets Speaker
KATHMANDU: Ambassador of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to Nepal, Hwang Yong Hwan, paid a courtesy call on Speaker Taranath Ranabhat at the Speaker’s chamber in the Parliament Building on Sunday. On the occasion, discussions were held on the

KATHMANDU: The chairman of the Rajparisad Standing Committee, Parasu Narayan Chaudhari, has said that the public libraries play a vital role to develop knowledge and provides education of the 21st century and makes the people aware. He made this remark while inaugurating the 35-day-long training on ‘Books and Information Science, Level Three’’ organised by the Kathmandu Valley Public Library Society. Chairman of the Society, Dr Narayan Khadka said that the library has achieved remarkable success in a short period and aimed it to make one of the best libraries in Asia. — RSS
Folk dance contest
BHAKTAPUR: Four S Education Nepal organised a Valley-wide Inter-School Folk Dance Competition in Bhaktapur, on Saturday. At the competition, Binayak Shikshya Niketan, Mount View and East Point schools stood first, second and third respectively. Some 10 schools of the valley participated in the competition. District Education Officer, Bir Singh Dhami, gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners. — RSS
