NC members resign
Biratnagar:
Three new members of the Nepali Congress (NC), Morang District Working Committee, Rukmini Koirala, Ranu Adhikari and Gita Silwal, on Sunday resigned their posts, saying their nominations had been “unilateral.” A few days ago, four other new members resigned in a similar fashion. With the resignations of the three today, the number of working committee members who have resigned has reached seven. In a statement the same day, the three said that although they had resigned from the committee they would continue serving as active members of the Nepali Congress party in the ongoing political movement. — HNS
Maiden cargo train
BIRGUNJ:
A cargo train from Haldia seaport in India arrived here for the first time on Sunday, 14 months after the Sirsiya dry port (ICD) came into operation. Earlier, only cargo trains from Kolkata port used to bring in goods. Additional goods are scheduled to arrive via Haldiya on October 5. Cargo containers imported from other countries first reach India’s Haldia and Kolkata sea ports before they are transported to Nepal in trains, trucks or trailers through the various check posts. — HNS
Ordinance issued
KATHMANDU:
The King has, in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal, 1990 and upon the advice and consent of the Council of Ministers, promulgated the ‘Ordinance to Amend Some Nepal Acts Related to Revenue-2005’. The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers stated this on Sunday. — RSS
SAARC meet
KATHMANDU:
The first SAARC Energy Ministers’ meeting concluded in Islamabad on Saturday, endorsing a report on future course of energy cooperation among member nations. The ministers issued a joint statement, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting decided to set up a SAARC Energy Centre in Pakistan and cooperate in development and effective use of energy resources in the region. The meeting also decided to work towards establishing energy ring in South Asia, as decided by the 12th SAARC Summit. — RSS
Hemp haul destroyed
POKHARA :
Hemp worth around Rs three lakh was destroyed at Dhikurpokhari VDC of Kaski district at the initiative of the local Youth and Children Group. As incidents of theft, rape and hemp-smuggling were on the rise, local youths and children united to destroy the hemp, said Mohan Bhandari, a local. — HNS
Elderly Day observed
BHARATPUR:
Elderly people sheltered in the Rotary Karunalaya Old Age Home at Devghat were given fruits by the Rotary on Saturday on the occasion of the International Elderly Day. On the occasion, free health service was provided to the elderly people and medicines were distributed among them.The old age home is being run by the Chitwan Rotary Club and the Kathmandu Bhid Rotary Club. The home accommodates 22 elderly people. — RSS
Newborn found dead
RAMECHHAP:
The body of a newborn baby has been found abandoned in ward number 3 of Ramechhap district. According to Police Inspector, Deepak Shrestha, the body of the infant was found on Saturday at Bajhbari in Babiyakharka VDC. The body was already decomposing when it was discovered, the police said. — RSS
