Social worker dead
BIRATNAGAR: Social worker Chandrika Prasad Lohani died in Biratnagar on Saturday. He was 84. Lohani was an asthma patient and was suffering from pneumonia. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons.He had served as chairman and secretary of various local schools. — HNS
FNJ branch gets new body
BUTWAL: The sixth convention of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Rupandehi branch, elected D R Ghimire as chairman of the branch. Similarly, the convention elected Khimananda Bhattarai, Deepak Gyawali and Yamlal Bhusal as vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer respectively. Dipendra Kunwar, Bhawani Prasad Pandey, Bishnu Prasad Ghimire, Bindu Kumar Chauhan, Indira Aryal and Ramkrishna Bhandari have been elected as members. — RSS
Three cops injured
KHANDBARI: Three policemen posted in Sankhuwasabha district prison sustained injuries when a railing fell to the ground on Friday. Lal Babu Kandungwa, Hari Budhathoki and Ramesh Tamang were injured in the accident. Kandungwa and Budathoki have been flown to Kathmandu for treatment, according to security sources. — RSS

BIRATNAGAR: The first phase of the special polio vaccination campaign of 2061 commenced here on Saturday. Japanese ambassador to Nepal, Tsutomu Hiraoka, inaugurated the programme by offering polio drops to a baby. — RSS
Looters’ gang busted
Bharatpur: Security forces yesternight nabbed a gang posing as Maoists and extorting people on the Narayanghat-Mugling road. Security sources said that those arrested are Rana Bahadur Magar, 24, Gun Gurung, 15, Ram Kumar Majhi, 15, Bire Majhi, 16, Himal Gurung, 23, Sujan Gurung, 16, Gopi Alemagar, 24, Basanta Majhi, 16, Santosh Ale, 12, and Raju Waiba, 20. The security personnel arrested four dacoits the same night with Rs 9,555 and toy pistols. — RSS

BHADRAPUR: The central vice-president of the Prajatantrik Deshbhakta Sangh, Shyam Krishna Bhattarai, in a press release on Sunday, called for the immediate release of the organisation’s central president Raj Bhattarai who was abducted by an unidentified gang from Birtamod on Thursday. — RSS
Commits suicide
UDAYPUR: Bimala Rai, 25, of Sangamchowk in Triyuga municipality-2 committed suicide by consuming poison. In the suicide note recovered from her room, Rai had written that she decided to kill herself as she could not study well. Rai was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead. —RSS
