New AI Nepal chief

bharatpur: Pradip Pokharel has been re-elected the chairman of Amnesty International (AI), Nepal Chapter. The 12th annual general meeting of the Amnesty International Nepal Chapter that concluded here on Saturday elected a new working committee of the chapter under the chairmanship of Pokharel. The general meeting unanimously elected Chairman Pokharel, vice-chairman Rajesh Gautam and Treasurer Hemkumar Khadka. Monastery awaits facelift

ILAM: The 300 years old Yangyong monastery in Kajini of Fikkal VDC -1 of Ilam district lies in a dilapidated condition in absence of preservation. Historical artifacts inside the monastery that also owns a trust of 56 ropani of land are worn out, says vice-chairman of the Monastery Management Committee Prem Lapcha. According to Lapcha, rats have dug out a hole in the main statue of the monastery while six important books have been damaged. Likewise, goods of traditional and cultural importance like small statues, nagara, dyangro, mane, gyaling, nagara and chedong are also in a poor state. RSS

Four persons awarded

JANAKPURDHAM: Four persons were awarded here by the Baidhyanath-Siyadevi Maithili Award Academy in recognition of their contribution to Maithili language, literature and culture. Those honoured with the award were linguist Prof Dr Yogendra Yadav, playwright Mahendra Malegiya, stage artist Chaturbhuj Ashabadi and Kashidevi Jha, widow of Martyr Igananda Jha. Chaturbhuj Ashabadi was honoured posthumously. His widow Maya Poudel received the award. The award carries a purse of Rs 11,111. RSS

Health camp held

DAMAULI: The District Development Committee, Tanahu with cooperation of Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara organised a daylong free health camp here on Saturday. In the camp, 940 people suffering from various health problems underwent medical examination and received medicines free of cost. More than a dozen physicians from the teaching hospital provided their voluntary service at the camp. RSS

Journalism training begins

JANAKPURDHAM: A weeklong journalism training organised by Nepal Press Union Dhanusa began here on Saturday. Altogether 31 journalists are taking part in the training.

Inaugurating the training, central member of Nepali Congress Dr Rambaran Yadav said the journalists have important responsibility towards the society and nation and pointed out the need for impartial journalism against anomalies in the social, political sector. RSS

7-km road constructed

ILAM: A seven kilometre motorable road has been constructed in Soyak VDC of Ilam through local voluntary labour. The newly completed section of the road lies under the proposed Chisapani-Mangalbare road. It was completed with cooperation of 17 local cooperatives institution that was supplemented by local voluntary labour worth Rs 176,000. RSS

Forest encroachment

NAWALPARASI: Jungle in Nawalparasi district, which covers 55 per cent of the total area, has been affected by the increasing encroachment for some years. Various people in the name of landless settlers have encroached hectares of jungle on the either sides of Mahendra Highway, it is said. A total of 5,000 households have been settled by encroaching the jungle in various pretensions at Bardaghat, Dumkibas, Benimanipur, Gaidakot, Dhobadhi, Makar, Shiva temple and Chhipchhipe VDCs of the district, reveals a statistics available at the District Forest
